Nicholas J. Savin, Superintendent of Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School, has announced the Valedictorian and Salutatorian for the Class of 2009.
Maggie Millner, daughter of Bob Millner and Barbara Sepp of Cherry Valley, is the Valedictorian of the Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School’s graduating Class of 2009.
Maggie has been a member of the Varsity Soccer and Track and Field teams, winning a number of awards for these activities, and has been recognized as an exceptional scholar becoming a National Merit Finalist and NFAA Young Arts Finalist.
She is a member of several clubs and organizations, including the National English Honor Society, National Honor Society, NYS Mathematics Honor Society, French Club, Spanish Club, Ski Club, Varsity Club and Drama Club.
She has held many positions as officers in a variety of clubs, including Student Council Secretary, Student Council Vice President, Iridescence Literary Magazine as Editor in Chief, and National English Honor Society President
Her musical talent shines in All County Band, Area All State, Jazz Ensemble, New York State School Music Association Festival Soloist, All County Choir, Jazz Choir and Select Choir.
In the community, Maggie is involved in the Venturers’ Scouting as president and the Roseboom Historical Association as corresponding secretary.
Maggie’s education does not conclude during the school day as she has participated in a multitude of conferences during her high school career, including: New England Young Writers Conference at Bread Loaf, St. Lawrence University Young Writers Conference, Pen In Hand Upstate New York Writers Conference, Share the Words High School Poetry Competition, Bennington College International High School Poetry Competition, Gannon University High School Poetry Competition, Nancy Thorp/Hollins University High School Poetry Competition, University of Buffalo High School Poetry Competition, Indiana University Perdue University Indianapolis High School Poetry Competition, Ryder University High School Poetry Competition (honorable mention).
She was given the Award of Excellence at the EPIC Young Voices International High School Poetry Competition and won the Waukegan Public Library Ray Bradbury Prize for Creative Writing.
Her gift of writing has afforded her publication in Stone Canoe Literary Magazine, Cargoes Literary Magazine, Ryder University Literary Magazine and the Daily Star.
Maggie will be attending Brown University in the fall, where she will be majoring in English and writing.
Spencer Staley, son of David and Cynthia Staley of Springfield Center, is the Salutatorian of the Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School’s graduating Class of 2009.
Spencer is a full time student at Herkimer County community college completing his high school requirement for an advanced regents diploma. He was on the Dean’s list for the fall semester.
He has been a member of the varsity soccer, baseball and basketball teams, winning a number of awards for these activities.
He is a member of several clubs and organizations, including Drama Club, French Club, Varsity Club and Ski Club.
His musical talent shines as a participant in All-County Band and Jazz Ensemble.
Spencer is a member of the National Math Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society, National Honor Society, and college honor society, Mu Alpha Theta.
In the community, Spencer has participated in a Katrina relief carwash, Adopt-a-Highway, the varsity baseball clinic for young players, and American Legion baseball.
Spencer will be attending Colgate in the fall, where he will be majoring in Physics and Astronomy. |
