Graveyard shift

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office has announced the recovery of stolen property related to thefts from area cemeteries between early 2007 and late 2008. Deputies acting on a tip recovered approximately $1,500 worth of stolen items from a private residence in the town of Otsego. The cemeteries where the thefts occurred appear to be located in the towns of Otsego, Middlefield and Edmeston and possibly other sites involved that have not been identified yet.

This is an active ongoing criminal investigation and further details regarding suspects and recovery location will not be released due to the integrity of the investigation.

The sheriff’s office is asking anyone who had property stolen from a gravesite during this time period to contact Sgt. Raymond Freer at the sheriff’s office at 607-547-6443 for an interview and to possibly identify recovered propoerty. The sheriff’s office would like to return as much recovered property as quickly as possible to the families who have had an invasion of their loved ones resting places.

Some of the stolen items include a bird feeder, a Virgin Mary statue, a concrete bench, wreath stands, urns, lights, bronze war veteran decorative stars, flower pots angel statues.

Photographs of the recovered property can also be viewed at the sheriff’s office website at http://www.otsegocounty.com/depts/shf/.

Where’s the beef?

On Tuesday, January 6, 2009, Ernest H. Ward, 39, of Richfield Springs, was arrested and charged with petit larceny following an investigation by the Otsego County Sheriff’s office of a reported theft of a two year old Hereford steer.

According to the report, the defendant had a Hereford dropped off to be processed on September 28, 2009 at his business, known as E&L meats, in the town of Richfield and failed to return the meat to the owners.

The above entries were received via fax from the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office.
