The product called Sunstone was first viewed by a Cormetech associate while attending a Tennessee Recycle Coalition conference in Franklin.

The glass was collected by recycling centers, pulverized into small pieces and tumbled to remove the sharp edges.

This patented process by Andela Products makes a product called Sunstone that is safe to handle, walk or drive on. When it is used for driveways, playgrounds, and landscaping Sunstone is more cost effective than traditional mulch and will last longer.

The glass reflects light back up to the plants and will not hold heat. It helps keep the landscaping beds insect, weed, and slug free. The water flows through the Sunstone quickly but the glass retains water on their numerous particle surfaces. This moisture is available for the plant's root system and they stay more hydrated, even in drought conditions.

David Farless with Grass Masters installed the glass and was very pleased with how easy it was to handle and install.

“I would be very happy to work with the product again and would consider becoming a vendor for Sunstone in this area,” stated Farless.

“Andela’s product is a great way to put recycling into action at Cormetech with a new and innovative use for recycled glass,” said Denise Rice, plant manager for Cormetech's Cleveland Operations. “The benefits that it offers made it an easy decision to switch.”

The change to glass was a smooth and enjoyable experience for Cormetech. It adds an artistic touch and really brightens up the landscaping.

Cormetech Inc. was founded in 1989 as a joint equity venture between Corning Inc. and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

Headquartered in Durham, N.C., the company is the worldwide leading provider of SCR catalysts to the power generation and process industries. Cormetech’s products reduce nitrogen oxide emissions generated by many different applications including gas and coal-fired power plants, allowing utilities to continue production of clean power.

Cormetech also offers a wide range of catalyst management services including catalyst inspection, laboratory testing, catalyst installation, and in-situ catalyst replacement. Cormetech SCR catalysts are presently installed in over 1,000 units worldwide.
