Today’s youth determine direction of community
Every now and then, events occur that make me pause and count my
blessings. One such event is the debate concerning The Zone and the
attitude of some toward our youth in general.
Thinking back on my childhood, I was very fortunate to have adults
around who realized that the youth today determine that direction of
the community. They also recognized that time spent with us – if only
for a moment or two – was time well invested. They provided insight on
many of life’s lessons and guidance through mistakes. They taught us
how to do things even though it slowed them down when they were busy.
They encouraged us when we did right and held us accountable when we
did wrong. Sometimes we were even sent home, but it was always with an
invitation to return once we had learned our lesson.
If I could go back in time, I would thank them for sharing their
homes and backyards, and especially for sharing a part of themselves,
including us in their lives when they didn’t have to. It was assuring
to know there was a place for us.
